Is Your Vehicle Getting Too Hot?

The change from one season to another makes us change the climate systems in our homes and vehicles. When it’s hot, you want to be cooled off and when it’s cold, you want to be warmed up. When you turn on the air conditioning in your vehicle, you expect it to begin to blow cool air at you within a few minutes. If your A/C isn’t working properly, you could be in for a miserable time on the road, especially during the hot summer months.

How Does Your A/C System Work?

The air conditioning system uses a refrigerant and a motor to cool air and push this cooled air into the cabin area of your vehicle. The motor is typically attached to the serpentine belt of your engine which turns the motor to help move the air through the system. If the A/C system in your vehicle isn’t blowing any cool air into the cabin, there are a few reasons that could be simple fixes for you to have performed so that you can have a cool vehicle once again.

1. The Air Isn’t as Cold As it Once Was

If this is the case, you could have a small leak in the system and the refrigerant could be escaping out of the system. Vehicles used to use Freon as the refrigerant, but since this chemical is no longer allowed to be made in the US, R-134 needs to be used. If your vehicle is low on coolant, you need to have a certified technician add a bit to your system to make sure your vehicle can be cooled off once again.

2. Foul Smells Coming From the A/C Vents

Have you driven for several days without using any of the venting systems of your vehicle? Has your vehicle sat without being driven for a long time? If you have a foul smell in your A/C system, you might have mold that needs to be cleaned out. Visit a service center and let them handle this cleaning for you.

3. Unusual Banging or Rattling Noises

When you have a strange sound coming from the engine area and all you’ve done is turn on the A/C system, you could be faced with a bad condenser, worn fan belt, or debris that’s clogging the fan. Regardless, you need to have the system serviced if you want it to operate properly for you.

4. Puddles or Stains from Water on the Floorboard Under the Dash

If you have moisture under the dashboard there is a chance the A/C system could have a clogged drain hose that needs to be cleared.
